Research And Planning

Before setting out on your journey it is best to do a preliminary research on what to expect while in Spain. There are a few things you need to keep in mind before planning out your itinerary.

Climate & Weather

It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the climate and weather patterns of the regions you plan to visit. Spain’s diverse geography means that weather conditions can vary greatly from one area to another.

From the sunny Mediterranean coast to the mountainous regions of the Pyrenees, each destination offers a unique climate experience.

Research average temperatures, rainfall, and seasonal variations for your intended travel dates. This will help you pack appropriate clothing and accessories, ensuring you stay comfortable throughout your journey.

Consider whether you’ll need lightweight and breathable fabrics for hot summers or layers for cooler evenings. And in many cases, you may need a little bit of both.

Local Customs & Etiquette

Every country has its own set of customs and social norms, and Spain is no exception. To ensure you don’t unintentionally offend anyone, take the time to familiarize yourself with the local customs and etiquette.

Spaniards are known for their warm hospitality and appreciation of traditions so it’s wise to show respect for their cultural norms and practices.

Learn a few basic Spanish phrases to greet locals and express gratitude.

Understanding dining etiquette, such as meal times and tipping practices, can also enhance your dining experience. Additionally, be mindful of appropriate clothing choices, especially when visiting religious sites or attending formal events.

Being more culturally sensitive will not only make you feel more at ease, but it will also leave a positive impression on the locals.

Pack According To Your Itinerary

While Spain as a whole offers a myriad of attractions, each region and city within the country has its own distinct charm and requirements. Take the time to research the specific destinations you plan to visit, delving into their unique characteristics and any specific considerations you should keep in mind.

Certain regions may have specific dress codes, such as covering shoulders or wearing appropriate footwear when entering religious sites. Others might require advance booking for popular attractions or specific permits for outdoor activities.

By researching ahead of time, you can ensure that you have the necessary information and resources to fully enjoy your chosen destinations.

Essential Documents

When venturing beyond the borders of your own country, it is important to keep all your essential documents in order.

Passport And Visa Requirements

Your passport is your ultimate travel companion when exploring the world. Before your departure, ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. It’s also crucial to check whether you need a visa to enter Spain, depending on your country of citizenship. Research the specific visa requirements well in advance and allow sufficient time for the application process, if applicable.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a vital aspect of any trip, including your journey to Spain. It provides peace of mind and financial protection in case of unexpected incidents such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost belongings. Research and select a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers your specific needs and activities while in Spain.  After traveling for over thirty years we are big believers in travel insurance.  Check out our resources page for some of our preferred companies.

Emergency Contact Information

Additionally, make sure to carry a document containing emergency contact information. Include the contact details of your travel insurance provider, your embassy or consulate in Spain, and a trusted emergency contact back home. Having this information readily accessible will ensure that you can quickly reach out for assistance if the need arises.

Copies Of Important Documents

As an additional precaution, make multiple copies of essential documents and store them separately from the originals. These copies should include your passport, identification, travel insurance documents, and your detailed itinerary. Distribute these copies among your luggage, carry-on bags, and leave one set with a trusted person back home.

In the unfortunate event that your documents are lost or stolen, having copies readily available can expedite the process of obtaining replacements. It is also advisable to scan or photograph these documents and store them securely in a password-protected digital format, such as cloud storage, for easy access anywhere.

Packing Essentials

Adjust Your Clothing According To The Climate

When it comes to packing outfits for your Spanish adventure, consider the climate and the activities you have planned. Spain boasts diverse climates, ranging from sunny Mediterranean coastlines to cooler mountainous regions. It’s essential to pack accordingly to stay comfortable throughout your trip.

  • Layering options for varying temperatures: Pack a combination of lightweight, breathable clothes for warmer days and evenings, as well as a few layers for cooler temperatures. This way, you can easily adjust your clothing based on the weather or the activities you’re engaging in.  One of my favorite items is a cotton cardigan that is light to pack and can even fit in a purse or backpack on day trips.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Spain’s cities and towns are best explored on foot, so be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes. Opt for sturdy yet comfortable footwear that will support you during long walks and sightseeing excursions.  Make sure to break in your new shoes before your adventure to ensure you don´t get blisters during your long walks.
  • Swimwear and beach essentials: If you plan to visit Spain’s beautiful coastal areas or enjoy its inviting beaches, don’t forget to pack swimwear, a beach towel, and sunscreen. These essentials will ensure you can make the most of the sun and sea.

Travel-Sized Toiletries

To lighten your luggage and comply with airport regulations, consider packing travel-sized toiletries and personal care items. Bring mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion, or transfer your favorite products into travel-sized containers.

Additionally, don’t forget items like toothpaste, a toothbrush, and any other personal care items you may need.  Bug spray and sunscreen are also a must!

Medications And First Aid Kit

If you take any prescription medications, ensure you have an ample supply to last the duration of your trip. It’s also advisable to carry a small first aid kit with essentials such as band-aids, pain relievers, antihistamines, and any other medications or items specific to your needs. Having these items readily available can help address minor health concerns while traveling.  Spain is also full of pharmacies with knowledgeable pharmacists that can help you should the situation arise.

Travel adapters and chargers

Spain operates on 230V, 50Hz electrical systems, which may differ from the standards in your home country. Don’t forget to pack travel adapters that are compatible with Spanish outlets to charge your electronic devices. It’s also a good idea to bring a power strip or a multi-port USB charger to conveniently charge multiple devices at once.

Banking essentials

Create a budget considering the activities you plan to participate in when traveling to Spain. While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s always advisable to carry some local currency for smaller establishments or areas where card payments may not be accepted. In many locations in Spain they still very much prefer cash.

Before departure, notify your bank or credit card company about your travel plans to avoid any issues with card usage abroad. Familiarize yourself with the location of ATMs and currency exchange services, and research any potential fees associated with these transactions.

Safety and Security

There will always be a threat of theft and scams especially when you’re a tourist in a foreign land so make sure to use good practices while traveling abroad.

Securing personal belongings

While exploring the vibrant streets of Spain, it’s important to prioritize the safety and security of your personal belongings. To minimize the risk of theft or loss you can do the following:

  • Use a secure and sturdy travel bag or backpack with hidden compartments or anti-theft features.
  • Keep your valuables, such as your passport, money, and electronics, in a secure and discreet location, such as a money belt or a concealed pouch.
  • Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or flashy accessories that may attract unwanted attention.  We always suggest leaving all jewelry and valuables at home.
  • Stay vigilant in crowded areas, tourist hotspots, and public transportation, where there is a threat of pickpockets.
  • Be cautious of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings at all times, especially in busy markets, restaurants, or public transportation.
  • Consider using locks for your luggage, especially when storing it in hotel rooms or during transit.

  • Program emergency contact numbers into your phone, including local emergency services (112 in Spain), your embassy or consulate’s contact information, and the contact details of your travel insurance provider.
  • Familiarize yourself with the location of the nearest police stations, hospitals, and pharmacies in the areas you plan to visit.
  • If you’re staying in a local accommodation, inquire about their emergency procedures and contact information for on-site assistance.

Health and safety precautions

Prioritizing your health and safety is crucial when traveling to Spain. Here are some important steps to take:

  • Check if you require any vaccinations before traveling to Spain. Consult with your healthcare provider or visit a travel clinic to ensure you are up-to-date on routine vaccinations and receive any specific vaccines recommended for your destination.
  • Purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation, and trip cancellation or interruption.
  • Carry a small first aid kit with basic supplies for minor injuries or illnesses.
  • Be mindful of any specific health risks in certain regions of Spain, such as mosquito-borne diseases in coastal areas or mountain-related risks in hiking destinations.

  • A universal travel adapter ensures your devices can be charged anywhere.
  • A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated while exploring.

  • A sturdy daypack for carrying essentials during day trips and excursions.
  • A travel guidebook or maps for reference and inspiration.
  • A travel-sized laundry kit or stain remover for on-the-go laundry needs.

Leave Room For Souvenirs

When packing for your trip to Spain, it’s wise to pack light and leave room for souvenirs and mementos you may acquire along the way. Here are a few tips to help you achieve this:

  • Plan your outfits ahead of time and choose versatile clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched.
  • Consider packing clothing items that can be easily washed and dried, allowing for minimal clothing items to be carried.
  • Opt for lightweight and compact travel toiletries to save space in your luggage.
  • Roll your clothes instead of folding them to maximize space and minimize wrinkles.
  • Consider purchasing certain items, such as toiletries or disposable clothing, upon arrival in Spain to further reduce your luggage weight.

Utilizing Translation Apps

While English is widely spoken in popular tourist areas, having a few language resources can be helpful during your travels in Spain. Consider utilizing the following:

  • Download a translation app, such as Google Translate or iTranslate, to assist with communication and understanding.
  • Carry a pocket-sized English-Spanish phrasebook or language guide for basic interactions and common phrases.
  • Familiarize yourself with essential greetings, expressions, and basic vocabulary to show respect and engage with locals.

Dining Etiquette

Understanding tipping practices and dining etiquette in Spain can enhance your dining experience. Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Tipping in restaurants is not as common in Spain as it is in other countries. However, it’s customary to leave a small tip, usually rounding up the bill or leaving a 5-10% tip for exceptional service.
  • At bars or cafes, it’s common to leave small changes as a token of appreciation for the service.
  • When dining in local establishments, it’s polite to greet the staff in their local language so learning a few phrases is important and considerate.
