Volunteering Opportunities for Teens in Spain…

I am a fifteen year old who moved from the United States to Spain several years ago and now I travel the world with my family of five seeking out adventure and meaningful experiences.  While we seek out all types of travel including cultural experiences, outdoor adventures and even wellness retreats our favorite type of travel always includes volunteering.  We have found that travel experiences that include volunteering in the community we are visiting ends up being the most rewarding, as well as the very best way to really learn about a  community and meet locals. We have been lucky enough to take part in some incredible volunteering programs in Spain over the last few years.  Sometimes we do them as a family, other times I get to go alone or with my older sister.

Volunteering brings  people together, strengthens communities, improves job skills, and helps protect the health of our  planet. Living in Spain for the last two years I’ve found some great opportunities here that I want to share for anyone looking to make a difference and have an amazing experience volunteering.

From Ibiza to Bilbao you can find volunteer opportunities all over the country of Spain . These programs allow you to make a positive impact in fields such as animal care, youth support, marine conservation, education and more. Finding the right program that focuses on your passion and aligns with your values is easy to do as there is a big selection once you know where to look. I’ve put together a list of 5 of my favorite volunteer opportunities in Spain to consider if you’re looking for opportunities to give back!

Program 1: Teaching English

The first program is called “Ciee Teach English Abroad”. Located in the region Castilla y León, otherwise known as the “Land of The Castles.” Ciee provides you with a local host family to stay with, along with meals provided and airport pick up and drop off. With a total of 12 hours a week working as a language assistant, you will help children develop their listening and speaking skills in English. This is such an intimate and meaningful way to connect with local families because you are actually living with them and sharing meals.   In addition, you will be presenting one of your cultural traditions to students to deepen their understanding of the English language and it is really fun to see how interested they are in different cultures and to learn about where you come from as well. You can also participate in other subjects such as music, theater, and sporting events. There is no need for prior teaching experience or a visa.

Program 2: Help Abandoned Cats in Barcelona

Volunteers HQ´s Animal Care project helps people connect to the local lost cats and find them new homes. Located in Barcelona, you can enjoy the local monuments and restaurants in this beautiful city while also connecting with locals and working on your Spanish. Weekends are completely free, and you may spend your time as you want. You will stay in a hostel that includes a dining area, social area, bedrooms and bathrooms. As an animal volunteer you will spend time with the cats and keep them active and healthy. This includes feeding them, providing time out of their enclosures, cleaning, grooming, and raising awareness about animal abandonment. The end goal is to have them adopted by a local family.

Project 3: Beach and mountain clean up

Bilbao is known for its beautiful beaches and mountain views. However, they are currently at risk due to lack of protection. This program is keeping beaches and mountains clean while helping you make life-long memories and friends. Spanish classes last from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, during the first two weeks of your stay. In your free time activities include hiking, sightseeing, water sports and souvenir shopping. The fee per week is 423 euros, the program provides free wifi, airport taxi and room accommodations. You must have an intermediate English level and or a basic Spanish speaking level. Program begins every Monday.

Program 4: Food rescue and community empowerment

This program focuses on uplifting an underserved migrant neighborhood. As a volunteer, you will help combat food waste, address hunger, and help create a sustainable community. You will learn about the rich culture of Barcelona and make meaningful relationships with the locals and other volunteers. Preferred arrival day is Sunday, then orientation begins Monday morning. Some of the daily community workshops include, yoga, meditated, material arts and indoor rock climbing. As for the weekends you have completely free, you may explore the local Mediterranean beaches or other local activities. The total fee per week is 640 USD, however, the program provides three meals per day, airport pickup, room accommodations and 24-hour support. If you are interested in helping communities in Barcelona get the support and food they need, then this is the program for you.

Program 5: Creating Safe Spaces for Dogs

This one is maybe a little out of the ordinary, but I love dogs so I wanted to include it.   Just outside Madrid’s city center, you can help take care of a family of 5 dogs. Including walks in nature, feeding, play, training, supervision and health care. This program provides a private bedroom, with a shared bathroom and kitchen. The minimum stay is 2 weeks however a month is better to properly bond with the dogs. The hours expected are 5 a day 5 days a week, at times you will be on your own but other times there might be a few exchange travelers. Food is provided in the shared kitchen, along with internet access. This program is entirely free, however, you need to have a bit of experience with handling big dogs and be able to remain calm and in charge. David is the owner and he will teach you all you need to know and guide you through your stay!

Final thoughts

These are just a few of the amazing volunteer opportunities for teens in Spain.  Please let us know about other opportunities you’re aware and we’ll add them to the list!  And thanks for making the world a better place!
