We love empowering women from all walks of life to embrace the world, navigate hurdles with ease, and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. As a solo female traveler for more than thirty years I am passionate about helping women see the world on their own terms and some of my most rewarding experiences come from hearing from other solo female travelers as they share the remarkable details from their adventures and experiences!

Pre-trip preparation

As it is with most international travel experiences doing some pre-trip planning is a game changer to ensure a safe and smooth sole female travel trip. While I personally love not over scheduling or planning my trips, when I am traveling alone as a woman or helping other women plan a solo journey I suggest having some things figured out to ensure that you do not end up in an unknown part of town or uncertain of your transportation when there is more risk to consider.

Research your destination

Before embarking on a solo travel adventure, it is crucial to thoroughly research your destination. Take the time to consider safety factors specific to the location you will be visiting. Keep a lookout on travel advisories, check the crime rates, and understand the local laws and regulations.

Being aware of potential risks can help you make informed decisions and take necessary precautions to ensure utmost safety. Additionally, familiarizing yourself with the local customs, traditions, and cultural norms will help you understand the local culture. This will not only enhance your travel experience but also help you blend in and avoid unintentionally offending anyone.  I never like to tell woman that they should not travel to a certain location, but the reality is not all locations are created equal when it comes to the safety of women.  After traveling to many destinations where I felt unsafe and on edge I often reflect on if it was worth the angst.  If there are locations that do not rank high in terms of personal safety I would strongly sugest traveling to those locations with a group or in pairs and save the solo travel for safer destinations.

Share your travel itinerary with loved ones

One of the most important safety measures you can take when traveling alone as a woman is to share your travel itinerary with someone you trust. This could be a family member, a close friend, or even a colleague. Provide them with details of your flight and accommodation arrangements, as well as any planned activities or excursions.

Regularly updating your moves will give your loved ones an idea of your whereabouts. In case of an emergency or if you go off the grid, having someone who knows your plans can be invaluable in ensuring your well-being. Remember you’re a solo traveler in a foreign land, usually where no one knows you. Technology makes it so easy to share where you are in real time.

Gathering all documentation

Before setting off on your solo journey, ensure that you have all the necessary travel documents in order. This includes a valid passport, visas, and any other permits required for the countries you plan to visit.  It is a good idea to make copies of these documents and keep them in a separate place from the originals. You can also store digital copies on your phone or email them to yourself for easy access.

Get travel insured

Travel insurance is an essential aspect of any trip, especially when traveling alone. It provides financial protection in case of unforeseen events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations or lost belongings. Before embarking on your journey, research and compare different travel insurance options to find the one that best suits your needs. There are some incredible options out there that are cost effective.

Insurance policies can be tricky so, ensure that your policy covers solo travel and offers comprehensive coverage for the activities you plan to engage in during your trip. Having travel insurance will give you peace of mind and protect you from unexpected expenses during your travels.

Packing tips for solo travel

Pack Light: Traveling alone means you are solely responsible for carrying your luggage, so it’s important to pack lightly so you can move around with ease. Stick to versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched, and consider the weather and activities you’ll be engaging in during your trip. It’s always about light and flexible layers when packing for a trip. I had a single pack for a year with no problems and just rotated through clothing which made things streamlined and easy!

  • Essential safety items: Prioritize safety by packing essential items such as a portable door lock, a whistle, a personal alarm, and a flashlight. These items can provide an extra layer of security and peace of mind during your solo travels.  There are a great selection of personal safety devices that are easy and convenient to travel with.
  • Find The Right Bag: Opt for a travel bag that is secure and practical. A backpack or crossbody bag with multiple compartments can help keep your belongings organized and easily accessible. Bags with durable material and secure zippers will help deter potential thieves. Fanny packs are also a useful and cute option!
  • Documentation: Keep all your important documents, such as your passport, ID, and travel insurance information, in a secure and easily accessible place. Consider using a document organizer or a waterproof pouch to keep them safe from damage.
  • Respect local customs Regarding Attire: Research the cultural norms and customs of your destination and pack clothing that respects them. This will not only help you blend in but also show respect for the local culture. Consider carrying a lightweight scarf or shawl that can be used to cover your shoulders or head if needed…it is one of my most preferred articles of clothing while traveling alone!
  • Medication and First Aid Kits: It’s always a good idea to have a basic first aid kit with you when traveling alone. Include items such as band-aids, pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, and any necessary prescription medications.  They make adorable ones now in cute cases and fun patterns.
  • Avoid Valuables Items: Avoid bringing expensive jewelry or unnecessary valuables that may attract unwanted attention. Leave them at home or secure them in a safe deposit box. Consider leaving behind temporary items that you can easily purchase at your destination to save space in your luggage.
  • Toiletries and personal care items: Bring travel-sized toiletries and personal care items to maintain hygiene during your trip. Consider packing items like a travel-sized hand sanitizer, wet wipes, sunscreen, and any other personal care products you may require.
  • Include versatile accessories: Pack accessories like scarves, hats, or statement jewelry that can instantly transform your outfits and add variety to your travel wardrobe. They take up minimal space but can greatly enhance your overall look and can allow you to go from day to night with ease!
  • Travel adapter and portable charger: Ensure you have a travel adapter that is compatible with the electrical outlets of your destination. Also, pack a portable charger to keep your electronic devices powered up while on the go.  This is one of my top five travel item recommendations!

Safety measures

Ensuring your safety is paramount when traveling alone as a woman. You can never be sure of what lies ahead so make sure you’re prepared and informed.

Trust your instincts, be spatially aware

Your instincts are powerful tools when it comes to personal safety. Listen to your gut feelings if a situation or person feels off. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times, especially in crowded areas or unfamiliar environments. Tourist-heavy areas can be full of scammers and thieves so stay vigilant. Always keep a lookout for anyone trying to go out of their way to help you.  I tell women that their intuition and awareness about their surroundings is the most important resource for staying safe while traveling alone.

Dress in accordance to local culture

Respecting the local culture and customs is not only a matter of courtesy but also a safety consideration. Research the normal dressing habits of your destination and pack accordingly. Avoid drawing unnecessary attention by dressing modestly in conservative areas or adhering to local norms. By blending in, you can minimize the risk of unwanted attention or harassment.  While you may not agree or understand all local customs it is important to respect them while traveling alone.

Minimize bedazzling yourself

Displaying valuable belongings can make you a target for theft or pickpocketing. Minimize the visibility of expensive items such as jewelry, electronics, or large amounts of cash. Keep your valuables secure and out of sight in a money belt, a concealed pocket, or a secure bag. By being discreet, you decrease the chances of being targeted by potential thieves.  There may be places or times that you can get more dressed up safely, but by in large blending in allows you to avoid unwanted attention or looking like a tourist and an easy target.

Utilize secure accommodations

Choosing secure accommodations is crucial for your safety. Prioritize reputable hotels, guesthouses, or hostels with good security measures. Look for accommodations that have well-lit entrances, secure locks on doors and windows, and 24-hour reception or security. It’s also a good idea to research the safety of the neighborhood where your hotel or motel is located and check out reviews from fellow female solo travelers.

Stay connected to people you trust

It’s important to maintain connections with friends, family, or trusted individuals while traveling alone. Regularly update someone you trust about your whereabouts and share your travel plans with them. Check in with them periodically and let them know if there are any changes to your itinerary. You can also connect with the concierge or front desk staff at your hotel or hostel before venturing off as they are usually a great local resource for safe and secure travel.

Stay indoors as night falls

Walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar or unsafe areas, can put you at risk. Plan your activities in a way that allows you to return to your accommodation before dark. If you need to go out at night, use trusted transportation options such as registered taxis or ridesharing services. When possible, arrange for transportation through your accommodation or use reputable local transportation services that your hostel or hotel is familiar with.

Solo travel etiquette

When traveling alone as a woman, practicing good etiquette can go a long way in enhancing your experience and fostering positive interactions with locals. Here are some important aspects of solo travel etiquette to keep in mind:

Local customs and traditions

Show respect for the local culture by familiarizing yourself with the customs and traditions of the places you visit. Be mindful of dress codes, religious practices, and social norms. Adapt your behavior accordingly and avoid engaging in activities that may be considered disrespectful or offensive. It is important to respect cultural differences do maintain safety, even if they feel foreign to you.

Be cautious when interacting with strangers

While it’s natural to meet new people during your solo travels, exercise caution when interacting with strangers. Trust your instincts and be mindful of your personal safety. Avoid sharing too much personal information or divulging details about your accommodation or travel plans to people you’ve just met.

Learn basic phrases in the local language

Learning a few basic phrases in the local language can go a long way in breaking the ice and showing respect to the locals. Simple greetings, thank you, and please can go far in establishing connections and demonstrating your willingness to engage with the local culture. Locals often appreciate the effort and may be more open and helpful when you make an attempt to communicate in their language.

Engage in cultural experiences

Embrace the opportunity to engage in cultural experiences during your solo travels. Participate in local festivals, try traditional cuisine, visit historical sites, and immerse yourself in the local arts and traditions. Respectfully learn about the culture, engage with locals, and be open to new experiences. Finding new ways to soak in your surroundings will enrich your journey while fostering meaningful connections and cultural understanding.  One of my all time favorite ways to connect with a community while traveling is to volunteer.  You will get an authentic experience of the community with locals, while having a meaningful experience as well!

Building a support network

When traveling alone as a woman, it’s essential to build a support network that can provide guidance, advice, and companionship.

Connect with locals and fellow travelers

One of the joys of solo travel is the opportunity to meet fellow travelers from around the world. Strike up conversations with other travelers in hostels, cafes, or common areas. Share experiences, exchange tips, and even join forces for sightseeing or exploration. Additionally, try to connect with locals through cultural activities, community events, or social gatherings. They can offer valuable insights, recommendations, and local knowledge that can enhance your travel experience.

Join online travel forums

The internet is a valuable resource for connecting with other travelers and seeking advice. Join online travel communities and forums where you can interact with like-minded individuals. Platforms such as travel blogs, social media groups, and travel-related websites give opportunities to ask questions, share experiences, and seek recommendations from fellow travelers. Build a virtual support network and gather valuable insights before and even during your trip.  There are incredible resources and forums for solo female travelers that are not only full of invaluable information but allow you to connect with other females traveling alone.

Seek advice from experienced solo women travelers

Learning from the experiences of other solo women travelers can be invaluable. Seek advice from those who have already traveled to your destination or have extensive solo travel experience. Read blogs, watch vlogs, or listen to podcasts where solo female travelers share their insights, tips, and personal stories.  The resources and support available from other solo female travelers are incredible, and one of the most important resources as you embark on traveling alone.

Consider joining group tours or activities for added safety

If you’re looking for added safety and companionship during your solo travels, consider joining group tours or activities. These can range from day trips and excursions to multi-day tours that cater specifically to solo travelers. Not only do these group experiences offer the opportunity to meet fellow travelers, but they also provide a level of security and support, especially in unfamiliar or remote destinations. They are usually a lot of fun and you make friendships that last a lifetime.

Self-care and well-being

Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial when traveling alone as a woman. Keeping up a daily routine even on trips will help keep you fresh and rejuvenated and grounded each day of your trip.

Practice self-care routines while on the road

Maintain your regular self-care routines even while traveling. This can include activities such as exercising, meditating, journaling, or practicing mindfulness. Find moments of solitude to recharge and reflect. Engage in activities that bring you joy and help you relax, whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk in nature, or treating yourself to a spa day. Spending some time alone to reflect and get present is one of the most valuable experiences to come out of solo travel.

Carry necessary medications

Prioritize your health by taking necessary precautions and carrying any required medications. Stay hydrated, eat nutritious meals, and practice good hygiene. Pack a small travel-sized first aid kit
with essential items such as band-aids, pain relievers, and any prescription medications you may need. Research the availability of medical facilities at your destination and ensure you have appropriate travel insurance to cover any unforeseen circumstances. It can be helpful to know where the closest medical clinic is should the need arise.

Unwind, relax and rejuvenate

Traveling can be exhilarating but also exhausting. Make sure to prioritize rest and relaxation during your solo travels. Listen to your body’s signals and take breaks when needed. Allow yourself downtime to unwind and recharge. Quality sleep, proper nutrition
, and relaxation techniques can help you maintain your energy levels and overall well-being. I always find resting before dinner, but after a busy day of exploring is an ideal time to catch your breath and reflect on your day.

Travel stress and anxiety

Solo travel, like any other type of travel, can come with its own set of stressors and anxieties. It’s important to manage them effectively. Find coping strategies that work for you, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, or engaging in activities that help you relax.

Be flexible and adaptable in your plans, and give yourself permission to adjust your itinerary or take a break if needed. Stay connected with loved ones for emotional support and consider journaling to process your thoughts and emotions.  It is also a good idea to not overschedule your trip.  Having downtime and open windows allows for rest and recovery.  I am a big believer in slow travel and keeping things flexible.  This type of travel enhances the experience and allows you to pursue activities that appeal to you while discovering a new place.

Handling unforeseen situations

While traveling alone as a woman, it’s important to be prepared for unforeseen situations that may arise during your journey.

Familiarize yourself with emergency contacts and services

Before embarking on your solo travels, familiarize yourself with emergency contacts and services at your destination. Save the local emergency numbers in your phone and know how to contact local authorities, medical services, and your country’s embassy or consulate. Research the location of hospitals, police stations, and safe zones in order to be able to act swiftly in case of emergencies.

Have a backup plan for communication and finances

It’s essential to have backup plans in place for communication and finances. Carry extra copies of important documents such as your passport, identification, and travel insurance information. Keep copies in both digital and physical formats, and store them in separate locations.

Have alternative methods of communication, such as a backup phone or a prepaid SIM card. Additionally, have backup sources of funds, such as multiple credit or debit cards, traveler’s checks, or emergency cash, in case of loss, theft, or unexpected expenses.

Know how to handle harassment or uncomfortable situations

Unfortunately, harassment or uncomfortable situations can occur during solo travel. It’s important to know how to handle such incidents assertively and confidently. Trust your instincts and remove yourself from any threatening or uncomfortable situations. Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs regarding harassment, and know your rights as a traveler. If you feel unsafe, seek help from authorities or find a safe space such as a nearby business or a crowded area.

Be quick on your feet for unexpected change

Travel plans can change unexpectedly due to various reasons such as weather conditions, transportation disruptions, or personal circumstances. Stay adaptable and have a flexible mindset to navigate these changes effectively. Keep track of alternative routes or modes of transportation, and have a contingency plan in case your original plans need to be adjusted.

Nights out

Exploring the nightlife can be an exciting part of solo travel. However, night life can also have a dark side. It’s essential to prioritize your safety and well-being while enjoying a wild night out.  Stick with friends if possible and make sure to not compromise your thinking and situational awareness.

Research nightlife venues and areas

Before heading out for a night on the town, research the nightlife venues and areas at your destination. Look for areas that are known to be safe and vibrant, with a variety of options that suit your interests. Ask locals or fellow travelers for recommendations. Having a general understanding of the nightlife scene will help you make informed decisions about where to go.

Stay connected

When venturing out for a night out, it’s important to inform someone you trust about your plans. Share details including the places you plan to visit and your estimated return time. Provide them with contact information for your accommodation and establish a check-in system, so they know you’re safe. This way, someone is aware of your whereabouts and can check in on you if necessary.

Stay aware and vigilant

While enjoying your night out, especially as a woman, it is crucial to remain aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye on your drink at all times and avoid accepting drinks from strangers. Trust your instincts and be cautious when engaging with unfamiliar individuals. If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, don’t hesitate to exit or seek help from nearby staff or authorities.

Use reliable transportation options

When it’s time to return to your accommodation after a night out, prioritize your safety by using reliable transportation options. Research and identify trustworthy transportation services in the area, such as licensed taxis, rideshare apps, or official public transportation. If possible, pre-book a reliable transportation option or ask your accommodation for recommendations. Avoid accepting rides from strangers or unlicensed vehicles, as your safety could be compromised.
