The natural scenic beauty of Switzerland is arguably some of the most breathtaking in the entire world.

Located in the heart of Europe, Switzerland boasts some of the most remarkable landscapes on the planet. From crystal clear lakes to stunning and charming villages, Switzerland is a paradise for nature lovers and explorers eager to find some of the most beautiful vistas on the planet.

We have been lucky enough to travel through Switzerland for thirty years and continue to be spellbound by all it has to offer.  If we were going to recommend one country in Europe to take in the natural beauty and spectacular views it would be Switzerland.

While Switzerland is the spot to visit for unparalleled natural beauty it is also a country full of unique culture, advanced technology and amazing food.  Additionally Switzerland constantly tops the list as the one of the safest countries in the world with some of the lowest crime rates and one I always fell safe traveling through alone or with our family.

In order to help you see some of the most stunning and scenic views in all of Switzerland we have put together a list of some of our favorites and the locations that quite literally have taken our breath away.

Today, we’ll discuss 8 places in Switzerland that you should visit while traveling through Switzerland.

So let’s take a closer look at these breathtaking Switzerland locations.

8 Places for the Best Scenic Views of Switzerland

places to visit in Switzerland

Switzerland is different from other places in the world because of its natural beauty.

There truly are dozens of must see locations but here are some that top our list.

Let’s check them out.

1. Jungfraujoch

The vistas from the mountains of Switzerland are specifically famous. To enjoy one of the most spectacular views, you need to visit Jungfraujoch. This incredible location is called the ‘Top of Europe’ with its snow-capped peaks and glaciers. If you are lucky enough this place can show you the Switzerland northern lights. In fact, the red aurora, a sight even more rare than the green northern lights were seen at the summit of Jungfraujoch.

The cogwheel train journey that takes you up the mountain is a highlight as you wind up the mountain through tunnels into a world of white wonder and natural beauty.  Our kids love this train trip and it is great for the entire family.   Make sure while you are there to enjoy the Ice Palace, where ice sculptures  and even the floor are made of ice. Other attractions are the Sphinx Observatory’s terrace and the Aletsch Glacier, which is the longest in the Alps in this country.  The entire journey takes about four hours and is well worth a visit.

2. Zermatt and the Matterhorn

Zermatt is an Alpine village near the iconic pyramid-shaped Matterhorn. This is the Swiss village that you always hear of as being like a painted landscape. You should visit this area to enjoy a postcard-perfect view from every angle.

Here, you can enjoy world-class skiing and snowboarding in winter. Besides, summer is the best time for hiking and climbing the mountains. The best part of these areas is the car-free streets with cozy chalets and aesthetic shops. For all these attractions, you should live a few days to a week at this place to enjoy all the unforgettable scenic beauty.

3. Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva is one of Europe’s largest lakes which is specifically famous worldwide for its aesthetic and photogenic beauty. The lake’s crystal-clear waters shimmer against the backdrop of the majestic Alps.

If you are here, make sure to explore the lakeside towns of Montreux, Lausanne, and Geneva. These villages have attractive natural beauty with super clean streets. You don’t even need a bike or car, indeed walking on the street will give you a perfectly romantic feeling.

4. Swiss National Park

Don’t leave Switzerland without paying a visit to Swiss National Park. This part is located in the eastern part of Switzerland and it is famous for its unspoiled natural beauty.

This place is also very famous for activities like hiking trails through lush forests, alpine meadows, and rugged mountain landscapes. However, the wildlife, including ibex, chamois, and golden eagles are the best things to explore at this park.

5. Lauterbrunnen Valley

Lauterbrunnen Valley is a postcard-perfect destination renowned for its cascading waterfalls and dramatic cliffs. As a water-fall lover, you should explore this valley with time in your hand because it has a lot more to explore. The lush green meadows dotted with traditional Swiss chalets and grazing cows are famous tourist places.

Also, you should visit the majestic Staubbach Falls which are considered the valley’s hidden gems. However, you shouldn’t miss the villages of Wengen and Mürren. If you love adventure, make sure to try paragliding in this ethereal valley.

6. Lucerne

On the shores of Lake Lucerne, Lucerne is a place surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Well, this one is not a village, indeed a small city which is famous for its well-preserved medieval architecture, like the iconic Chapel Bridge and Water Tower. On this bridge, don’t forget to take the panoramic video clips.

On your stay in this place, make sure to visit the Lion Monument, a poignant sculpture honoring Swiss guards who died during the French Revolution. Lucerne offers the most outstanding boat cruise on Lake Lucerne which is your must-try.

7. Interlaken

The next gem is Interlaken. This place is situated between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. It’s a beautiful town surrounded by blue-water lakes and towering mountains. From Interlaken, it’s very easy to reach the Jungfrau region which treasures the most breathtaking landscapes in Switzerland.

In this place, make sure to try activities like paragliding, skydiving, and canyon swinging against the backdrop of the stunning Swiss Alps. Besides, the leisurely boat cruise on the crystal-clear waters of Lake Thun or Lake Brienz should be on your to-do list as well.

8. Grindelwald

Grindelwald is another picture-perfect mountain village near the Bernese Alps. Known as the ‘Glacier Village,’ this village is famous for the views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains.

Here, you should explore the village’s charming streets lined with traditional chalets, boutiques, and cafes. If you love hiking, this place is perfect for you to explore the surrounding mountains and glaciers. If you don’t like hiking, you can simply take a cable car ride to enjoy the view.

Wrapping Up

Besides the mentioned places, you should also pay a visit to Gruyeres, St. Moritz, Creux du Van, Sion, and Appenzell. These places also treasure the most eye-soothing scenic views of Switzerland.

Exploring all these places can be difficult if it’s a short trip. So, make sure to take enough time so that you can finally say that it’s a successful trip to your dream country Switzerland.
